Suriname Advances Responsible AI Governance with UNESCO’s RAM 2.0

In 2021, UNESCO Member States adopted the Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, the first global framework guiding the ethical design, development and use of AI. 

To support its implementation, UNESCO developed a program to strengthen national capacities and regulatory frameworks, anchored by two main tools, including the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM). 

The session focused on Suriname brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including welcome remarks by Honorable Minister Andrew Baasaron, the country's Minister of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation.

The meeting drew 106 participants from 67 institutions across 10 sectors, establishing a strong multi-stakeholder foundation for the work ahead.

As the assessment moves forward, surveys, interviews and sectoral consultations will help build a fuller picture of how AI is already being used in Suriname, the opportunities different sectors are seeing, and the governance, skills and safeguards needed to support ethical AI adoption.

This milestone places Suriname at the forefront of efforts to advance ethical and responsible AI governance in the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.
